13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of 13-inch MacBook Pro displays may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:

  • Screen backlighting displays continuous or intermittent vertical areas of light across the entire bottom of the screen
  • The screen backlight function is completely disabled

Affected devices were sold between October 2016 and February 2018. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will repair affected MacBook Pro units free of charge.

Eligible models

To find your computer model and see if it qualifies for the program, choose Apple menu () > About This Mac. Listed below are the eligible models.

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Note: No other Mac laptop models are eligible for this program.

Service procedure

Bring your device to our authorized service center for screen repair. Before service, your MacBook Pro will be checked to confirm that it qualifies for this program.

To prepare your drive for service, back up your data.

Note: If your MacBook Pro has any damage that makes it difficult to service, that damage must be repaired first. In some cases, costs associated with the repair may be incurred.

Additional information

This Apple program is worldwide and does not extend the normal MacBook Pro warranty coverage.

If you believe that your MacBook Pro has been affected by this issue and you paid for your screen to be repaired, you can contact Apple to request a refund.

The program covers eligible MacBook Pro models for 5 years after the first retail sale of the unit or for 3 years from the date the program was announced, i.e. until 05/18/2022, whichever is more beneficial to the owner.
