Detailed Description
The OWC Express 4M2 Ultra is a four-bay external NVMe storage enclosure built around Thunderbolt 5. It accepts four single- or double-sided M.2 2242 or 2280 NVMe SSDs with PCIe Gen 3, Gen 4 or Gen 5 interfaces. Note that it does not support SSD drives with built-in heat sinks due to size constraints. Each bay provides PCIe 4.0 x1 performance, with individual drive speeds of up to 1,600 MB/s.
The enclosure provides two USB-C Thunderbolt 5 ports, with one used for connection to the host computer and the second available for daisy chaining additional Thunderbolt devices. With compatible Thunderbolt 5 systems and PCIe Gen 4 or newer SSDs, OWC specifies real-world performance of up to 6,622 MB/s. Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 systems can reach up to 3,200 MB/s, while Thunderbolt 3 Macs can reach up to 2,800 MB/s.
Storage can be configured as RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 10 or JBOD using SoftRAID or another compatible RAID utility. The enclosure is available empty for a DIY configuration, or preconfigured with 4 TB, 8 TB, 16 TB or 32 TB of NVMe storage. Multiple units can be daisy chained to create a single volume of up to 128 TB.
The aircraft-grade aluminium enclosure uses passive heat dissipation together with a 40 mm adaptive fan that activates according to drive temperature. A 90 W external power supply is included, along with a 0.7 m Thunderbolt 5 cable.
